Did you catch any of the highlights from the coronation of King Charles III, Reader?
MeiMei and I were especially interested during the anointing to listen to the musical anthem of Zadok the Priest by Handel. Last year she performed this piece on the double bass at a school orchestra concert. 🎼
I was surprised to see the frequent references to Jesus who came to serve, to inspire the monarch to live a life dedicated to service. The Bible says in Mark 10:45, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
But we know that service isn’t just for royalty—all family members can imitate Jesus’ example and find purpose in serving others.
Change-maker families can also take inspiration from this verse and find ways to serve others in their unique lives.
Here are three ideas to reflect on you own unique life and how you can live a life of service:
✨Identify your family's strengths and passions: As 1 Peter 4:10 says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” What are your family’s unique gifts and talents? What causes or issues are you passionate about? By identifying these strengths and passions, you can find ways to use them to serve others. Have a conversation today about 1 Peter 4:10.
✨Volunteer together: Look for opportunities to volunteer as a family. This could be at a local food bank, animal shelter, or community center. In Matthew 25:40, Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Reflect on your past volunteer opportunities and discuss what happened and the impact of your volunteering. Not only will you be making a positive impact, but you'll also be spending quality time together.
✨Practice gratitude: In Philippians 2:3-4, we’re reminded to “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Take time as a family to reflect on the things you’re grateful for. By cultivating a sense of gratitude, you'll be more mindful of the needs of others and more motivated to serve.
By living a life of service, we can find meaning and purpose in our daily lives. Whether through volunteering, supporting a cause, or simply being kind to others, there are countless ways to make a positive impact in the world.
MeiMei mentioned last week that we are preparing to move from China. I am sorting through things and re-reading cards and notes that people have given to us over the years. To be honest, I don't always remember what prompted the thank-you or have a clear memory of doing anything significant. It means a lot that someone took the time to share gratitude.
I've realized again, that a life of service isn't about grand gestures or royal occasions.
I truly believe that the most important impact is in the small, day to day actions that we take. As I look back on the years, I know that people who were sincerely kind in the moment have made lasting impressions on my life.
Grateful for you, Karin (the Mama)
PS: Thank you to everyone who wished Elena a happy 18th birthday! 🎉

Hey there,Reader ! It's MeiMei here this week! In today's newsletter I want to talk to you a bit about the idea of "opening your eyes." Something that I know many of us fall prey to is having "blinders" on during a busy or stressful season. We often focus on one thing -- which can be considered our end goal -- and that limits our distractions and keeps us from straying from our main task. I'm not implying that this is a bad thing whatsoever, because there truly are times when we need to focus...
Hi there Reader! It’s MeiMei here this week – it’s been a bit since I last wrote to you. A LOT has happened since then. In the past two weeks I’ve graduated high school and moved to the USA. 🎉Those are two pretty big milestones and they come with a lot of changes. My graduation was a meaningful experience to say the least. After attending Concordia International School Shanghai for 14 years, my graduation was both eagerly anticipated and reluctantly experienced. It’s hard to close a chapter...
Greetings Reader! In the midst of preparing for graduation and an international move, we've been taking a trip down memory lane. While cleaning out our game cabinet, we had a fun and interesting conversation about the board game "Life." It's been around for a long time, with updates and refreshed graphics. Game of Life is an American classic board game where players spin a wheel to move along a path of life events, such as education, career, marriage, and children. 👉The objective is to...
